Who's Afraid
Don Grose
I almost forgot...went to see , Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf at Neptune Theatre last weekend.
Outstanding ! The male lead I have seen in several
stage performances and did a marvellous job with
what I suspect is a pretty tough character to do.
Fiona Reed may be one of Canada's most recognizable
actors - and I have to admit - that based on what
I have seen on television - I really had never
taken her very seriously.....shame on me...
the right play - and the stage really are where
actors earn their stripes. Credit to everyone
at Neptune for staging such an ambitious undertaking
and pulling it off without flaw.
Before the play we visited the Press Gang - one of
the city's better known restaurants. I was
disapointed. Four of us went for dinner - the two
ladies ordered the same thing - the boys ordered
two other selections - and the four of us expressed
exactly the same feeling...the experience went downhill from the unique cavernous setting.
We ordered calamari and escargots for appetizers -
the calamari was less than inspired - absolutely
nothing to set it apart from calamari you
might find anywhere - the escargot on the other
hand was terrific, and provided hope that the
meals to follow would be as exceptional.Didn't
happen. I have no idea whether it was bad night for
the chef or whether our experience was typical -
but the Press Gang is not an establishment on my
hurry back list. The service was a plus but at the
prices - you expect good service. At a place
where the prices dictate Five Star - you expect
a dining experience - not Steak and Stein.
Does anyone care how Phil Mickelson does this
weekend ? I don't. I'd rather eat lint. Without
Tiger and most of the other big names the week
before Augusta is dreadfully dull. Lefty has left
me wanting baseball to start. Mickelson is one of
those golfers on the PGA Tour who has absolutely
no marquis value at all - as good as he can be.
Good thing America's taken a shine to him because
I can't see anyone else lining up to lay claim
to him. That sheepish smile and "aw shucks" amble
make my skin crawl.
Almost time to rack my wine...and I've got a show to
write today..So gotta go.The Golf Shop Radio Program
airs Friday evening at 6PM on 920 CJCH...I beleive
you can listen to CJ on the web in streaming audio.
Join us won't you ?
Til next time - Hittem Long and hittem straight.
