Musings on a Saturday Afternoon
Don Grose
Another PGA tournament - another weekend off for
Mike Weir. Those who know me, know I don't often suffer for Mike Weir when things go poorly...Don't
get me wrong. I was a big Mike booster on his way
up..I was in his corner all the way in those early
multiple win golf seasons...I was ecstatic when Weir
topped the field at Augusta..A Canadian winning the
Masters..A left handed Canadian winning the Masters.
Outstanding ! Was I disappointed when shortly there-
after the winning stopped ? Yeah...I was just like
all the other Canadian golf fans whose dreams and
aspirations rode on Weir's success. But let's face
it...Mike had to work hard - devilishly so - to get
to the top...and Mike has a young family and his
management group had to keep him busy so as to
cash in on his ascention to golf's herarchy..Mike,
I'm afraid has lost the focus - lost the drive -
lost the blind internal fire that he needed to get
that green jacket. The question becomes - can he
rekindle that fire he needs to win again. He is to
be forgiven if he cannot. Mike accomplished more
than Mike ( I suspect ) ever dreamed possible.
He now has enough money that finances should never
be an issue with him....golf is his job...I'm not
sure that under the circumstances I'd be practising
six hours a day either.
Michele Wie...get off the mens' tour ! At 16 years old
all you are learning how to do is miss cuts !I can't
imagine at this point anyone paying extra, or buying
a ticket to watch her bogey her way around a golf
course...God love ya...get back on the LPGA Tour -
learn to win - and then see how you stack up.
Turning the page..I think it's absolutely shameful that
Canadian and American and other soldiers lives are
being wasted overseas. Did we not learn anything in
Vietnam ? When are we going to force our politicians
to do the right thing. Go to war to win - or don't go
war ! I am not a peacenik...I am not a war monger.
I think that our prescence in the Middle East is without excuse...the war being waged is a political one...and our politicians are killing our loved ones
the way chess peices are knocked over in a match. If you have sufficient purpose to go to war then you have sufficent purpose to win that war as expeditiously as
you can and without thought to enemy losses. If civilian casualties are enough of a concern to prohibit you going in all guns blazing - then you have no right to send our troops into harms way. What we
are watching every day is government with no vision,
no morals, no ethics, and bankrupt of compassion.
End the bloodshed now - buy the oil !
I was at a wedding this afternoon...very emotional.
Nice service...everyone looked very nice..the father
of the bride sang a song for his daughter and son in
law..beautiful. ( the acoustics in the church were
outstanding. ) Tyler , my son was a groomsman. I was
very proud of the him all decked out in his tux...
Hard to beleive it was the same no good rotten kid
that kicked my behind the last time we played golf.
Actually - and I'm not qualifying his victory -
but- come on...I beat hm by three the first day of a
two day competition...he eased his way back into
contention and then - oh my gawd - he took the lead.
Then I got back to within one shot with a miracle
par or birdie on one of the toughest holes at
Penn Hills, number 14, and then he four putted
15 to give me a three stroke lead with three holes to
go...I felt badly for him, so I four putted for triple
on the easiest birdie hole in the province, number
15 - and then, well who cares ! If I sound bitter
it's only because had I won I would have embellished
the details to make it sound equally , well,
unbeleivable. I will leave it to you the reader to
decide whether this actually ever could have happened.
Ha !
Gotta go....hittem long and straight..
