What !?!?!

Don Grose
So there I was - preparing to update my uncustomarily
neglected blog - when the phone rang...With customary
cheeriness I said, " Hello. " All I heard on the other
end was rattling and static, and " Shit !" Some people
really have to work on phone manners.
I had full intentions of playing golf today. There are
two clients I would still like to entertain on the
golf course before season's end. The rain put an end
to that. So the idea of golf Friday came up..Rain in
the forecast for Friday too. In the vernacular of my
children...."this is really starting to suck."
Which leads me to...After the Leafs first game this
season, I honestly harboured fears that they were
actually worse than the Toronto media would have us
beleive. When they managed to lose as convincingly as
they did to Ottawa, I pretty much resigned myself to
another dreadfully long season on Hockey Night in
Canada. However, I have to say that as cynical as I
admittedly remain, Paul Maurice has a style that
appeals to me...Contribute or wallow on the outside -
He sympathizes but it's up to the individual. Help me
win or sit...it's up to you. I like that. No favorites - no nonsense...It'll be interesting to
see how the Leafs do this season...John Ferguson Jr.'s
last as Leafs' GM...Still credit to the organization -
At least at this point in the season they are playing
lots of kids. Much like in Junior Hockey - September
through Christmas means nothing - keep the rest of the
division within sight and give your kids a real chance
to show what they can do. After Christmas make appropriate changes.
Ad Tip Du Jour...If you are in business - understand that the ad you run today - should be designed to influence the buyer in March...buying decisions are made everyday..if you think that anyone is going to
buy your product based on one ad - you're nuts.
You want to be planting seeds today to influence the
buying decisions to come. You want to sufficiently
impress the consumer that when he or she makes the decision to buy your product or service - you are the first company of which they think...and not only do
they think of you - they want to buy from you ! At the very least if your advertising is working you'll be
added to the shopping list - and that's a better first step than being ignored all together.
What do people think about when they think about the
business you are in ?
Hamburger - MacDonalds
Snowmobile - Skidoo
Facial Tissue - Kleenex
That's the result of successfull, aggressive and longterm advertising...you too can own your industry
locally if none of your competitors has had the
foresight and guidance to claim a mountaintop they
are prepared to defend. It's really not that complicated - and it can make a business a pile of money...
Call me sometime if you're in business and you'd like
to investigate the strategy of owning a marketplace.
I don't bite unless you're masquerading as a steaming
plate of lasagna with lots of cheese and freshly ground
pepper...and no one dressed like that should be
trying to communicate anything other than, " Dig in !"
with a dry red...mmmmmmm...
Til next time - hittem long and hittem straight.
Happy Trials.

When Things Go Badly

Don Grose
An all too well intentioned individual approached me
in the hallway during a recent very rare appearance in
the office..."Sorry to hear about that big account that
cancelled." he said. My response was a very simple and
sincere, "Thanks." And then I quickly added, " But
these things happen." I phrased it a little differently
than that but you get the general idea. Fact is,
that I have enjoyed the benefits of dealing with that
particular "piece of business" for several years..and
I'm much better off having had that good fortune.
It may take a couple of years to fully replace the
loss that business represents - but if I want it to happen more quickly I can. The nice thing about
sales and advertising sales particularly, is that
there is only person to whom I ultimately answer -
and that is me. Bottom line - this is merely a
three putt in the lifelong game of golf - and when
they write the history of the world it will barely
get a mention.
I cannot speak for anyone else, but I have so much for which to be thankful. I live in a part of the world
that knows peace, my family is healthy, I have a
terrific wife and two great sons of whom I am over-
the-top proud, and I have grown to love a border
collie who continues to teach me patience. My life is full and as fullfilling as I want it to be - and that
folks is what it is all about.
When things go poorly - take a second - I'll bet without too much thought you can find someone whose
far worse off than you.
Change is inevitable - unless you're dealing with a
vending machine.
Drop me a line sometime - I don't bite unless you're
masquerading like a veal cutlet with fries and cole slaw on the side...
Bless
Don
