Roses

Don Grose
A rose this week to a true pinnacle virtue - Ernie Fage.
Ernie, for anyone living outside of Nova Scotia,
is the member of the Provincial Legislature and
Cabinet Minister who for the second time has been
found dipping his toe into a pool of political scandal.
Ernie, is the central figure in a John Grisham meets
Nova Scotia yarn of deceipt, coverup, corruption,
and disgrace. Ernie is alleged to have left the scene
of an automobile accident, albeit a minor one back in November. Problem is, Ernie was driving his government paid-for vehicle, smelled of alcohol, left the scene
before police arrived, and God bless the camera phone -
witnesses got pictures. Funny thing - police never tracked the offender down that night...hmmm...funny
thing..everyone in the premier's office was aware there
was a problem that night...but the Premier was successfully kept in the dark for more than a month.
Funny thing...none of this was made public until the
individual with the camera - phone - pictures offered them for sale to local papers and TV....I hope he or she was handsomely paid...Ernie Fage should now be
barred from ever holding any public office and should
be denied any pension or other benefits he may have
otherwise earned through public service. The Premier's
Office should undergo a "professional" cleansing -
no severance, no benefits, just the disgrace of having
played a role in the coverup for everyone who earns
a paycheque working directly for the Premier...Oh -
and Rodney...he should be made to work the counter at
Burger King until such time as he proves himself ethically fit to do anything else...or..he could leave
the province. Just when we cynics start to think maybe
we have a warped view of the way things are and the
way they should be - something like this comes out...
We are a society out of control ! Is it any wonder that
we face the hurdles we face as a nation when we look to
the likes of Rodney, Fage, Chief of Staff Chisholm, and
any of the rest of the pack for leadership...these
are pathetic excuses for humanity who have completely
lost their way - and we have no one but ourselves to blame for having their kind in positions of power
in Ottawa and Province House...We are witnessing the
decline of a civilization.
Now having said all that - a rose to Ray Price...for
those who don't remember - veteran country singer
Ray Price...I heard Roses of San Antoine the other day..All the tiny classic country nerves in the back
of my neck stood right up...that's good music.
I was listening to the Emmylou Harris album Blue Kentucky girl in the car the other day and Save the
Last Dance for Me came on...I have no idea who her
bass player was on that track but what lovely tasteful
work it was. I wonder if folks who make records like those hear the tracks they played on years later and
recognize just how good their work was ? I wonder if
they care, or if they leave that to you and me ?
At any rate...not flashy, not even fancy, just really
flattering to the song and the other musicians..I think
the honesty and lack of pretention is what attracts me
to the country - and other - music that I like best.
Thank God we no longer have to worry about David Beckham and wife Posh and family starving on the
streets of Britain...thank God, some true humanitarian,
convinced Beckham it was in his best interest to accept
a ten year, 50 million dollar a year contract to play
soccer in LA....Let me see... people work hard their entire lives and can't afford decent health care, people work hard for 40 or 45 years and are told the
government pension won't be enough to keep them comfortable and they die in pain because they can't afford releif bringing drugs, our education system
is such that graduates are leaving university with loans the size of modest mortgages before ever landing their first jobs - and as a society we are supporting
an entertainment industry ( sports included ) that
can come up with that kind of money to pay one man to
play a game..and let's not even get into the fact that this particular man's best socceer days are behind him. Boggles the mind....the funny part of it is,
I was listening a sports talk show this afternoon and
their dialogue centred around how hard done by NHL
players are having to settle for modest 4 and 5
million dollar per year contracts...and we have
families living in the streets in every major North
American City...warped, warped, warped...
At any rate...if you've read all this..thank you.
I do enjoy the ability to rant...feel free to rant
back if you like.
I sold the Garrison guitar the other day..I was tremendously sorry to see the Red Rose go..it was the
only non-blond acoustic I owned..and it was the most
playable instrument ( in it's price bracket )I've ever
had the pleasure of owning...but unfortunately with the
Gibson Gospel, Larrivee, and Martin in the same house
it had stiff competition - and it never got played.
I hope the lady whose receiving it as a gift truly
enjoys it.
That's it...Bless.

2000 and what ?????

Don Grose
I'm hoping I'll get to seven and then as mystically
as it's hit me - my current writers' malaise will
fade away with no more fanfare than with which it's
baffled me these last eight months..I have about six
little melodies and hooks that I've been playing with,
constructing, developing, working and reworking -but for some reason - the words just won't come...and
it's not that I don't have lots to say....Lord knows
that even with the number of useless meetings I've
managed to remove from my life - there is still ample
material that remains - that produces excellent
motivation to communicate...
Try and watch the television news without being inspired to comment on either what passes for journalism or the greed, blind ambition and deception upon which our society is increasingly balanced...be concerned - be very concerned....
Who are the experts providing guidance for the people charged with making the decisions that dictate
what governments, corporations, small businesses and
even families do ? Who are they and how did they get
into the position from which they ease the rudder side
to side ? How many of them would you trust to do your private banking ? Now there's a sobering thought...
And yes there are also the rare tales of the truly wonderful acts of good and kindness that in fact we see too little of...so lots to talk about...
But getting the time - and focus - to organize thoughts into musical walkways, gondolas to ferry
ballad messages through canals of mind and heart -
there's the challenge.
Used to be two verses and a chorus were child's play.
The last verse was sometimes a challenge but I find
recently I have difficulty finishing a line on the
same thought matter with which I started. Fight through it - remain optimistic there are good things
ahead.
About eleven o'clock one night last week I was out in the driveway having one of my last cigarettes and
I looked up to experience one of life's little joys.
It's a little joy but a pure form of joy that I
truly appreciate. There wasn't a cloud in the sky.
The stars were the size of basketballs begging to
plucked and held...living in the country is full of
blessings easily overlooked...
Okay...so I've got work to do...so...headlines.
New Years Eve at Todd and Linda's...such nice people -
lots of good food to eat and lots to drink - cannons,
fireworks and playing guitar and singing til 4 AM.
New Years should be four times a year...of course they'd have to change the name.
Never mentioned Neptune Theatre's Oliver..what a
nice job ...terrific staging...the whole production
was marvellous. Those folks who've never taken in
a performance at Neptune are really missing something.
What a nice night out...
Speaking of which....Charlene and I finally had a
meal at "Seven" last week. Over the past couple of years we've been making an effort to visit as
many of the nice dining experiences as Halifax has to
offer and " Seven" lived up to it's billing.
On a scale of one to ten...ten being highest....
Food 9
Service 9.5
Room 8
We were downstairs - I'm guessing the upper area is
a tad more private..but all in all an experience
worth revisiting on all counts.
New Years Resolutions...No cigarettes, no VLT's,
no white flour, no sugar, no potato, exercise every day, play guitar everyday, and do something around the
house everyday. If I can cover those, seeking excellence in all I do, with the help of God, 2007
should be a good year.
Is there any other time you'd rather be living than
right now ?!?!? Cause you don't have a choice so you
might just as well make right now as good as it can
be.
Cheers...
Don
