Tempest in a Septic Tank

Seeeeeeeeeething...I'm just seeeeeeeeeething.
I can't beleive the story that has dominated Canadian TV News
for the last two nights. Shane Doan - the Captain of Team Canada at
the World Hockey Championships.
Almost two years ago an NHL official accused Doan of an anti-Francophone,
on-ice slur. No one beleived it. Teammates, opponents, other officials, the
NHL...the charges were dismissed. Except in Ottawa where a gaggle of
French Canadian MP's used their outrage over the incident to get their
otherwise meaningless personnas on the News.
I am from Montreal...my wife is of French Canadian descent. I love
pea soup ! and Gitanes ! and smoked meat piled high on rye ! But
man oh man - is there no limit to how small our politicians have
become ?
I don't know Shane Doan - but anything I have ever read or heard indicates
that he is a highly decent, principled, ethical, and spiritual model of a man,
much less a hockey player. Shane Doan is one of a handful of hockey players
representing his country ( PQ included ) on strictly a volunteer basis.
He is Captain because he is the best leader for that collection of playoff
castoffs....
The fact that some of our highly paid MP's can find no more meaningful
issues into which to sink their teeth than Doan's suitability as Team Canada
Captain - should be cause for their immediate dismissal -
Any MP in the last 48 hours who has appeared on camera to weigh in on
an issue with as little depth as this has proven how "galactically shameless"
they are.
Health Care, Education, Roads, Fiscal Irresponsibility, Waste, Pollution,
Over-Taxation, Corruption....these are issues worth attacking.
What a sick game our political process has become.
Our MP's have no shame. Our MP's have no backbone. Our best MP's
have surrendered to treading water in scum in hopes that somewhere
along the line they can make the slightest difference. It's their only
hope.
Our system must change - these are most desperate and discouraging
times. I hope Hockey Canada meets with government officials tomorrow
and tells them to go screw themselves and turn their attention to things
that matter.
Having said that , I am not a regular Oprah watcher...but I caught bits
of her show today - and I marvel at the inner strength exhibitted by
some. There was a woman whose husband killed their four kids and
then himself; there were two young boys with artificial limbs and
several others who had overcome tremendous difficulties and
challenges and who now were leading meaningful lives. The human
spirit is a wonderous, inspiring thing.
Now...to the truly important...let me just say that golf is a spectacular
game ! After playing nine holes at Riverhills a couple of weeks ago -
last Saturday morning I played my first 18 at Penn Hills in Shubenacadie.
I will readily admit to dragging my heinie around the last two or three holes,
Penn Hills is a good hike when you're in good shape but boy it was great
to be back playing again. Terry and Kelvin - Doug pooped out on us -it
was like we'd never stopped. Some really good shots hit - some atrocious
shots hit - some great one liners - some great laughs - that's what its all
about. By the way..professional, custom fitting is the only way to go.
Dana Wong at the Village Golf Shop in New Minas put together a set of
clubs for me this spring - and I'm telling here and now - what a difference.
Clubs designed to make me better as opposed to clubs designed to be sort of
like clubs designed to make a PGA tour player better. Call Dana today.
Seriously.
Gotta Go....the Sens and Devils are about to start..as are the Jays and
Indians...What a Raptors game last night...
Til next time...Bless
Don
