Simply Grand Theatre - Tiger Woods
By this time I shouldn't be - but I continue to be - taken aback
at the number of people - non golfers - who approach me after
another spectacle weekend and greet me with the comment -
"Tiger sure put on a show, didn't he ?"
Most aren't aware of what an admirer I am of one Tiger Woods -
but they know how much I love golf...and if you love golf I can't
imagine you not having at the very least an appreciation for
what Woods brings to the course every event - certainly every
major.
The fact that a 45 year old Rocco Mediate was in the final was news
because paired with Tiger it was the ultimate David and Goliath.
There was a human interest element to the story because most
in the golf business had pretty much resigned Mediate to the
wall decor section of the tour. Truly a nice guy and a spirit that
is admirable... and you love to see competitors who seem to
have a realistic appreciation of how truly fortunate they are...
but in terms of being drawing card - a network TV viewer
magnet - without Tiger, Rocco just doesn't cut it.
In any sport it is said the mark of truly exceptional competitor
is that he/she has the ability to make those around them
better - forces those around to be as good as they can be.
Tiger Woods by his very prescence - albiet on one leg -
created the venue upon which Rocco Mediate was able to stage
his finest performance...another credit to Rocco...given the
chance - he brought his best ...but as it proved again - a
journeyman's best is no match for a prowling Tiger - even
a wounded Tiger...
It'll be a while before we see Tiger again - he'll need time
to mend that painful knee...I suspect Tiger will also require
some time to rest from the mental, emotional, psychological
strain associated with winning his 14th Tour Major on sheer
strength of will alone...and that is what Tiger brings to the
game...and that is why Tiger is such compelling drama and
a draw that even non-golfers find hard to resist. It is the
human spirit on display at it's best.
Wow....
Til next time - hittem long and hittem straight..
